Common Questions

What It's Like Being a Real Estate Photographer

Curious about the job? Here are some of the most common questions we hear from people interested in the field.

What does a real estate photographer actually do?
As a real estate photographer you work directly with real estate agents to capture high-quality images, video, drone footage, and floor plans of their listings. Your goal is to make every property look its absolute best online so agents can market effectively and sell faster. We wrote a detailed overview of how we shoot HDR real estate photography if you want to see our process in action.
What gear do I need to get started?
A solid interchangeable-lens camera, a wide-angle lens, a sturdy tripod, and an external flash will get you going. We break down the full list in our blog post: What Gear Do I Need for Real Estate Photography?
Do I need a drone license?
If you want to shoot aerial photos and video (and most real estate photographers do), the FAA requires a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. We cover the details in Do I Need My Part 107 for Real Estate Photography?
Is real estate photography a good career?
It can be a very rewarding career with flexible hours, creative work, and solid earning potential. The demand for quality listing media continues to grow as agents recognize how much professional photography impacts their business.
Do I need prior photography experience?
Experience is a plus and we love hearing from photographers who already have a portfolio, but it's not a requirement. What matters most is a strong work ethic, reliability, and a willingness to learn. We provide hands-on training and mentorship to help you get up to speed quickly, so don't hesitate to reach out even if you're just getting started.
What does a typical shoot day look like?
Most days involve 2–5 property shoots spread across a region. You'll coordinate with listing agents, arrive at each property, set up lighting, photograph every room plus the exterior and yard, and then deliver edited images. The work is active, independent, and rarely boring. Check out our photography checklist for a sense of the prep that goes into each shoot.
Who are your clients?
We work exclusively with real estate agents and brokerages. Our photographers shoot agent-listed properties, so you'll be building relationships with local agents and becoming a trusted part of their listing process.
What areas does Higleys Media Group serve?
We primarily serve Northeast Pennsylvania and parts of New York. You can see the towns we work in across our Our Work portfolio.
